The State Pollution Control Board Sikkim (SPCB-Sikkim), on May 06, 2026, issued a public notice regarding the environmentally sound management and disposal of waste tyres under the Hazardous and Other Wastes (Management and Transboundary Movement) Amendment Rules, 2022. The notice highlights that improper disposal and open burning of used tyres pose serious environmental and public health risks, including air pollution and mosquito breeding.
The notice refers to the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) framework introduced through G.S.R. 593(E) dated July 21, 2022, under which tyre manufacturers, sellers, importers, recyclers, and retreaders are required to register with the Central Pollution Control Board and ensure scientific collection, recycling, and disposal of waste tyres through authorised entities. Producers are obligated to channel waste tyres only through registered recyclers and retreaders.
Further, the public has been advised not to burn waste tyres or dispose of them in open spaces, drains, rivers, or municipal bins. Consumers replacing old tyres are encouraged to hand them over to authorised dealers or designated municipal collection centres established under the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016. The notice also warns that violations may attract environmental compensation and other punitive actions under applicable environmental norms.
